Wraps Good Biography Size: Approx. 5 3/4" x 9" 
Biographical sketch of Joseph Henry (December 17, 1797-May 13, 1878), an American scientist who served as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. During his lifetime, he was considered one of the greatest American scientists since Benjamin Franklin. 10 pp. No date. Plain cream wrappers. Written in pen on front cover: "Henry, Joseph, Sketch of Life and contributions to Science". Mildly soiled covers. ex.mus. stamp and numbers on front cover. 1/4" tear at base of spine. 1" tear on back cover, close to spine otherwise covers are Very Good. Interior is tight, clean and Very Good+.

Each volume includes lists of accesssions to the collections and a list of publications. Green silk binding, gilt titles. Exteriors are Good. Some minor soiling, fading to spines and rubbing on edges. Covers are sound. All top page edges "spotted" (foxing?).

"The Joint Committee on the Library, to whom was referred the memorial of Mr. Catlin, for the purchase of his gallery of Indian collections and paintings, and also the memorial of American artists abroad, and of American citizens resident in London..." Catlin's Indian Gallery, which is housed at the Smithsonian Institute American Art Museum, is recognized as a great cultural treasure, offering rare insight into native cultures and an important chapter in American history. 3 pp. Disbound government document. Spine edge is chipped. Browning and foxing to pages, but text is easily legible. Document in VG- condition.

Includes the Reports of the Secretary of The Smithsonian Institution, from 1847 to 1853. They give a connected history of all the operations of the Institution, from its organization to the end of the year 1852. Floral blind tooling on covers. Slight bumping to corners, and slight rubbing to spine with three small nicks at edges. Spine with gilt lettering. Covers in remarkable condition for being almost 150 years old. Two previous owner's names on verso of front free endpaper: Hon. John M Weare, N.H. and Hane? Barlow, Exeter, N.H. Interior is good, foxing, browning to pages, one small rip on page after title page. Text legible. Index.
