Top page edge with black marking?- partially stamped? "Bound" in paper wraps with tissue guards at front and back. Very Good + condition. No tears. Interior is tight, clean and Very Good+. Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin (September 25, 1843 - November 15, 1928) was an influential American geologist and educator.

January 28, 1897--Referred to the Committee on Rivers and Harbors and ordered to be printed. 8 pp. Very large fold-out map. Disbound government document. Residue and string-tie from book remains on spine, with some small tears and holes from binding. Edges are creased and lightly browning, very light waterstain to top of pages 5-8. Map appears in VG condition, but there are some small holes appearing at folded corners (did not continue to open the map to carefully inspect and run risk of the damage becoming greater). Document in Good+ condition.

Letter from Secretary of War Communicating The report of Brevet Major General J. H. Wilson on the survey and examination of the Illinois river. "His object in the survey was to obtain such specific and accurate data as to be enabled to form estimates for the improvement of the river, so that the largest boats of the Illinois and Michigan canal, and steamboats drawing four feet of water, could pass through the river to the Mississippi during the season of extreme low water." 42 pp. Famous Americans in the document: Edmund Schriver, Inspector General; and James Harrison Wilson, Lieut. Col. 35th Infantry, Brevet Maj. Gen. Large foldout map: Map and Section of the Illinois River Showing proposed improvement by Canal and Slackwater for connecting the Mississippi River and Lake Michigan. Map is 43"x30". Map has some tears to creases and corners, some browning. First page of document brownish toned with tiny chips at side edge, otherwise document is tight, clean and Very Good.

Famous Americans submitting their report in this document: George Washington McCrary-Secretary of War; Samuel James Renwick McMillan, Jacob Henry Stewart, Joseph Washington McClurg-Chairman Special Committee; Gouverneur Kemble Warren-Major Engineers & C.; and Alfred Howe Terry-Brigadier General Commanding. 8 pp. Two large foldouts: Map of Mississippi River From Surveys made under the direction of Bvt. Maj. Gen. G. K. Warren, MAJ. of Engrs. U.S.A. Soundings taken Aug. 26, 1867 and Aug. 30, 1867. Size of map: 20"x19". Second foldout has no title. "Diagram" of Mississippi River with lettering showing "Island", "Bottom covered with trees", "Road from Ferry", "Stone Building" and "Cemetery". Paragraph in document explains it as "Four places where the bridge might be judiciously located." Disbound. String-tied. Front/back page loose but intact. Otherwise document is Very Good. Foldouts are Very Good+. No tears.

Some watermarks on plates' borders and one slightly on print. Interior foxing. Foxing mainly on and around prints. Overall text is clean. Some soiling. Overall interior is Good.
