Being An Abridgment of the Author's Larger Work on Human Physiology. "A desire has been frequently expressed by professors and teachers who have used my large work on "Human Physiology," that I should publish an abstract of it, suitable for use as an elementary textbook in colleges and schools. I have accordingly in this work endeavored to satisfy that wish, and to furnish a book sufficiently simple and compendious for such general use, and yet representing the state of the science at the present day." 376 pp. 140 wood engravings. Brown peddled covers. Spine lettering barely visible. Top spine end slightly fraying. Tiny piece 1/4"x 2/16" of base missing. Slightly bumped corners. Overall exterior is Very Good. Front endpaper with small bookplate, on free endpaper five small marks on ink smudging from numbers on opposite page's bookplate, mildly discolored endpapers. Otherwise interior is tight, clean and in VG+ condition. Exterior and Interior in amazing condition for a book almost 140 years old. John William Draper, 1811-82, was an American scientist, philosopher, and historian. born near Liverpool, England. In 1839 he became professor of chemistry at the Univ. of the City of New York. He helped organize the medical school of the university, became its professor of chemistry and physiology, and in 1850 succeeded as its president.

Jacques Loeb (born April 7, 1859, in Mayen, Rhineland-Palatinate; died February 11, 1924, in Hamilton, Bermuda) was a German-born American physiologist and biologist. Loeb was educated at the universities of Berlin, Munich, and Strasburg (M.D. 1884). He took postgraduate courses at the universities of Strasburg and Berlin, and in 1886 became assistant at the physiological institute of the University of Würzburg, remaining there till 1888. In a similar capacity, he then went to Strasburg University. During his vacations he pursued biological researches, at Kiel in 1888, and at Naples in 1889 and 1890. In 1892 he was called to the University of Chicago as assistant professor of physiology and experimental biology, becoming associate professor in 1895, and professor of physiology in 1899. In 1902 he was called to fill a similar chair at the University of California.

" Jeffries Wyman (1814-1874) was a Professor of American Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard. He was also the Director of the Peabody Museum. Paper covers faded around edges. Bottom corner, 1/2"x2" missing. 2 other missing pieces at side: 1" and 1/2". ex.mus. numbers. Back bottom corner missing, 1/2'x1 1/2". Covers are intact and overall Good.
