Jones, Adjutant General, Henry Stanton, Assistant Quartermaster General, George Gibson, Commissary General of Subsistence; Nathaniel Towson, Paymaster General; Thomas Lawson, Surgeon General; James Pollard Espy, American meteorologist who gave the first essentially correct explanation of the thermodynamics of cloud formation and growth. He was also one of the first to use the telegraph for collecting meteorological observations; Joseph Gilbert Totten fought in the War of 1812, served as Chief Engineer and was regent of the Smithsonian Institution and cofounder of the National Academy of Sciences; and J.J.
