President Washington having in view the growing greatness of the Confederacy, recommended the adoption of a plan of the city commensurate therewith....If the claims, thus briefly set forth, shall be admitted as just and reasonable...the permanent seat of the Government of the United States...to the memory of the "great and good" man by whose name it is honored. Its growth, in wealth and greatness, will render it a great and enduring monument to the memory of its immortal founder..." The committee consisted of W. A. Bradley, Mayor, N. The Council's assignment had its origin in the Inaugural Parade on January 20, 1961, when President Kennedy noticed the drab appearance of Pennsylvania Avenue and decided to do something about it. A Council was produced which submitted this Report. 56 pp. 54 illustrations with photographs, sketchs of the Avenue's history, facsimiles, large illustrated foldout showing the whole Avenue, and sketches of the plan showing specific areas of the Avenue. Green "linen-like" covers with title in gilt letters on the front cover. spine faded. Overall Book is Very Good to Very Good+. Interior is tight, clean and Near Fine. Illustrated slipcase. For a particular detail of the dimensions of the bridge; the several changes in the original plan, with the additions..the cost of the different portions of the entire structure and every charge connected with it; reference is made to the Engineer's report and its accompanying documents." 22 pp. including the Engineer's report, Table with Estimates, Petition of the "inhabitants of the city of Washington"; and Statement of bills paid by Treasury for building the bridge. Report of The Committee on the Judiciary: "The Washington Market Company was organized under an act of Congress approved May 20, 1870... That said company is hereby authorized and empowered to locate and construct a suitable building or building upon the following-described grounds, namely: commencing at the intersection of the center line of B street north with the west line of Seventh street west...The buildings described in the plans were large market-buildings on B street and Seventh and Ninth Streets to be used as a market, and a large five-story building on Pennsylvania and Louisiana avenues,..." Includes paragraphs from Sections 2, 5, 15, 17, of the Act. Also Joint Resolution of Center Market in Washington, Memorandum of agreement-Governor and board of public works with the Washington Market Company; and Act of June 26, 1873 making appropriations. Famous Americans in document: M.G. Emery, President of Washington Market Company, H.D. Cooke, Governor. Alexander R. Shepherd, James A.Magruder, Adolf Cluss and William E. (Background: In 1869, Adolf Cluss was selected by the Washington Market Company, to design a modern hall for, at the time, the most important market place in Washington, the publicly owned Marsh Market, adjacent to the Washington Canal, facing Pennsylvania Avenue at Market Square. The Washington Market Company was a private corporation chartered by Congress. The Board of Directors and major stock holders included D.C. Governor Henry Cooke, former mayor M.G. Emery, and Alexander Shepherd. Adolf Cluss (July 14, 1825-July 24, 1905) was a German-American immigrant who became one of the most important architects in Washington, D.C $50.00
